Pianos are large, fragile instruments that are large and bulky to move from place to place. If you are moving a piano from a building or house to a completely different location, a professional piano moving company can do all the work for you using the right equipment and strategies to prevent damage or injury. However, you might decide to simply move a piano yourself if you just want to transfer it to another room or corner of an existing house or building. Upright pianos require at least 2 people to move it, while grand pianos require at least 3 people. Depending on the style and weight of your piano, you may need more people to help transfer it from room to room.
Tools Needed To Transfer A Piano:
- Work gloves
- Measuring tape
- 1 or 2 large sheets of protective plastic
- At least 1 other person
Step 1
Use the measuring tape to check the measurements of the piano and cross reference them with the measurements of the area or room where the piano will be moved.
Step 2
Lower the lid of the piano and lock it. Cover the piano with a few large sheets of plastic to prevent any damages.
Step 3
Put on the work gloves and position yourself and the other individual at each end of the piano. Lift the piano together using your knees and without bending your back. Keep your back straight to avoid injury or back strain.
Step 4
Tilt the piano back slightly to take pressure off the front legs without tipping the piano over. It is not necessary to lift the piano entirely off the floor.
Step 5
Roll the piano on its back wheels along the floor while maintaining the tilted position and keeping your back as straight as possible. Avoid straining the legs of the piano when moving it over a carpet or threshold.
Step 6
Move the piano at a slow and steady pace, a few inches at a time. Keep enough weight off the casters to ensure easy rolling without lifting it completely off the floor. Lift the casters over obstacles or bumps in the flooring, one leg at a time.
Tips
- Never move the piano sideways first. Always transfer the piano by one of its ends.
- If you have a third individual available to help, assign that person to take hold of the handle found behind the piano the whole way through transferring the piano.
- Choose a room for your piano that is free from drafts, out of the way of direct sunlight, and stable in temperature and humidity.
