Keys are a common household item for most individuals and families. Whether it’s car keys, house keys, or mail keys, or keys for the place where you work—it is not always so easy to dig through your purse or coat pockets to find those keys.
Attaching a fashionable keychain to your keys can help you grab your keys without much effort at all. Using brightly colored fabrics and materials might help prevent your keys from getting lost amongst common household objects and furniture. The bright colors and vibrant patterns on a keychain will help your keys standout when you don’t have time to search high and low for where you left them.
Tools You Will Need To Make A Key Chain Out Of Fabric:
- 2 coordinating fabrics
- 1 strip of fusible interfacing
- 1 purse strap clip
- 4 inches ribbon
- Matching thread
- Fabric scissors
- Clothing iron and ironing board
- Sewing machine
- Lighter
- Pins
Step 1
Cut the fabric into strips that measure 2-3/4 inches by 13 inches. Do this for two coordinating patterns of fabric. You should have two each.
Step 2
Cut one strip of fusible interfacing so that it measures 3/4 of an inch by 12 inches.
Step 3
Place the strips of fabric on an ironing board with the fabric side facedown. Iron both strips a quarter of an inch down both sides.
Step 4
Fold each strip of fabric in half length-wise and run the iron over both strips again to flatten them. Make sure the edges are matched up and do not overlap one another.
Step 5
Place the strip of fusible interfacing evenly between the two strips of fabrics. Ensure that the folds of each ironed piece of fabric are placed so there patterned sides are facing outward.
Step 6
Iron together the two strips of fabric and the fusible interface between them. This temporarily fuses the top and bottom fabric to make the sewing process easier and creates sturdiness for attaching the keychain.
Step 7
Place the edge of the fused fabric about 1/8 of an inch of a seam and run the sewing machine along all four edges of the fabric so that the thread outlines and secures the entire piece.
Step 8
Slide the fabric through a purse clip to act as a keychain. Ensure that the purse clip is on top of the fabric you want showing on the outside of the keychain.
Step 9
Take one end of the piece and overlap the other end with it about a quarter of an inch. Place these overlapping ends underneath the needle of the sewing machine and sew the edges together using a zig-zag stitch three or four times back and forth to secure it.
Step 10
Take some ribbon and burn the edges with a lighter to seal it. Move the purse clip around the fabric until the seam lies about a quarter inch to half an inch above the clip.
Step 11
Wrap the ribbon around the section where the two ends of the fabric were sewn together. Tuck each end of the ribbon on the inside of the fabric.
Step 12
Pin the ribbon in place and use a sewing machine to sew the ribbon to the fabric. The ribbon should act as a closed fastener to prevent the purse clip from moving all around the rest of the fabric.
